Suns end another successful season with
the national U16 league
title.
The Sevenoaks Suns
Under
16 girls defeated the Doncaster Panthers in the playoff final last
weekend to claim their second national trophy of the year.
The Suns victories in
both
the Semi-final and final were emphatic as the team es-
tablished themselves as the best
U16
team in the country.
The Suns brought their best to the final, jumping all over Doncaster
in the first quarter, responding to a 2-0 deficit to run off 22
straight points. The
Suns never looked back from there, closing out the Panthers 63-36.
Renee Busch
MVP
(23 pts), Nadine Abbey(13 pts, 9 rbds) and Femi Hamilton(10 pts, 11
rbds) led the Suns.
Christine Keneally, who was the only Sun not to score in the
Southend game, came back with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2
assists in the final.
Suns win the U16 Cup
The U16 girls cup final was the first game played at the Nottingham Jesse Boots
Arena on the Women's day of basketball back in February 2009 between the
Sevenoaks Suns and the Southend Swifts.
The girls were determined to take home this trophy and this showed from the
tip-off. The quickness of passing, excellent offense and smothering defence
meant that the contest was all but over at the end of the first quarter, 18 - 3.
The lead had grown to 40-10 by half time.
One had to feel almost sorry for the
opposing players and Coach Busch must have felt that way too because he took off
the full-court press and started playing the bench in the second half.
Credit to the girls from Southend Swifts who still worked hard and managed to
narrowly win the 3rd and 4th quarters 16-17 and 13-21 respectively.
Eleven of the Suns made it unto the score sheet in what was a very balanced
performance. Game leaders were Femi Hamilton (16pts, 7rbds), Rene Busch
(15pts, 8 rbds), Nadine Abbey (8pts, 11 rbds) and Cheridene Green (8 pts, 6 rbds)Rene Busch won MVP honours
This was the Suns 5th national title in the last three years. This is particularly impressive as the club has only been in existence for four years. Last year the club won the U18 girls title and the Division 2 Womens Trophy.
The previous year the Division 2 Women won the Trophy for the first time.
The club also runs Division 4 men, U18, U16, and U14 boys
